Merry Christmas from all of us at First Word! Every year this decade we’ve released a seasonal gift to thank you for supporting us over the past twelve months. As well as providing a look back at of our musical year we also aim to add in the odd exclusive as well as a nod to what’s coming in the coming months.
We started the year with the enormous privilege of being named Gilles Peterson’s label of the year at the Worldwide Awards. Gilles’ show has been a source of inspiration from the early days of the label, so this was a huge honour for us and one that we’re very proud of.
Since then we’ve welcomed new artists in the shape of 14KT, Tawiah and Werkha as well as releasing music from old hands Darkhouse Family, Kaidi Tatham, Teotima, Souleance, Children Of Zeus, Myele Manzanza and Don Leisure. All are represented here with Children Of Zeus providing a brand new track ‘Get What’s Yours’.
Next year is looking incredibly exciting - we can’t wait to share with you what we’ve got coming up, suffice to say 2020 is looking bright. It’s been a challenging year outside of our musical bubble, which makes the sanctuary that music provides all the more important. It reminds me of a quote from British broadcaster and journalist Michael Parkinson - he was talking about sport but the same could be applied to music: ‘it’s not war, or death or famine - it’s not that at all. It’s the opposite of that. It’s to persuade us of a life outside of that… that’s why it’s important’.
We’re hugely grateful for all of you who have supported our music this year, it’s mind-blowing to think that we’ve been doing this for 15 years now, and we’re as enthusiastic now as we were back in 2004.
Have a great Christmas and a peaceful New Year - we’ll see you on the other side.
